Yoshida on PS4 Success: “Don’t Completely Understand What’s Happening”

The PS4 has been an astronomical success for Sony – at Gamescom last week, the company revealed that it sold 10 million units of the console worldwide. It hasn’t even been a year since the console’s launch and it’s already been proven to have beaten out the PS3’s first year sales by a wide margin. With that being said, President of Worldwide Studios for SCE Shuhei Yoshida isn’t completely sure how it’s such a big success.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida said, “It’s just beyond our imagination. We are so happy. But I for one am a bit nervous because we do not completely understand what’s happening.”

It’s especially strange because Sony’s marketing department revealed that many of the consumers for PS4 hadn’t bought a PS3 or any other next gen console. “As soon as we see a great sales number, our instinct tells us we should be concerned about future sales, right? Are we exhausting all the core gamers? If we sell this number of units, there are no more consumers we can sell to. That’s a really terrifying prospect.

“So we want to understand who are these consumers who we do not necessarily consider core gamers, who are purchasing PS4 and why they are doing it and what they are doing with PS4, so we can create a bit more of a positive future, rather than saying, wow, we have sold to every single core gamer. So that’s what we are doing.”

Regardless, whatever Sony’s doing is working. Do you agree? Let us know below.
