Nintendo: Zelda U’s Open World Is As Big As The Wii U Can Handle

Nintendo says weak hardware can constrict game design.

Zelda Wii U

Nintendo is already promising the world for The Legend of Zelda, the newest entry in the long running action adventure franchise that is due to hit the Wii U some time this year. We’ve known since last E3 that the game will have a vast, fully open world, and we’ve even seen a bit of it in action. But just how vast is this world? Very vast. Apparently, it is so vast that the entire map for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is equivalent to only one area in the game.

Series director Eiji Aonuma talked about the kind of open world Zelda U will have, stating that it is about as big as the Wii U will be able to handle.

“A huge, seamlessly unfolding world is something that can’t be achieved if the hardware isn’t advanced enough,” Aonuma told Gamereactor Magazine. “Ever since we made the very first generation of Legend of Zelda games though, we’ve had as large a world as can be realized with the hardware, so you could say it was inevitable that we’ve now done the same with the new Wii U title.”

It sounds like Nintendo itself is coming around to realizing that hardware isn’t just about pretty graphics, it can also help or hinder game design, judging by Aonuma’s comments.

But man, between this and Xenoblade Chronicles X, I think it is safe to conclude that Nintendo has regained its long lost ambition. Personally, Zelda U looks to be one of the best titles coming out this year- what do you think?
