Pillars of Eternity

Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity has seen a great deal of success, thanks primarily to its Kickstarter campaign which raised $3.9 million for the old-school RPG. What wasn’t revealed until now, thanks to a preview from the documentary Road to Eternity which covered development of the game, is that Obsidian was on the verge of closure until the crowd-funding campaign happened.

In 2012, Obsidian was going to release a high profile project for PS4 and Xbox One but this was cancelled which led to lay-offs. If a new project hadn’t been assigned, the studio would have faced closure. When Double Fine Productions’ Kickstarter campaign happened and the overall viability of crowd-funding was revealed, Adam Brennecke and Josh Sawyer created a prototype for Pillars of Eternity which it later showcased to the entire company.

Pillars of Eternity is currently slated to release on March 26th for PC, Linux and Mac OS X. What are your thoughts on its success thus far? Let us know in the comments.
