Today, Sony Computer Entertainment have officially revealed the upcoming PS4 2.50 “Yukimura” Software Update. Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Director of Product Planning and Software Innovation, Scott McCarthy dole out some extra information in the comments section of the PlayStation Blog.

The first thing that Scott wanted to emphasise was that making sure the update is hitch free and working the first time around is much more important than announcing a release date, but he did say that the release date would be announced soon. He said, “We’re in BETA, you know that means getting it right, then committing to a release date. We’ll be ready to announce a date soon.”

Gamers are also still waiting on DLNA support for the PlayStation 4 which, despite being previously available on the PlayStation 3, is yet to make the jump. Speaking about this, he said “We want PS4 versions of these features, not a cut/paste from last gen. Stay tuned.”

He also helped lend some clarification to the understandably uninformed regarding the quality of shared screenshots, saying “We are limited by the upload compression of the social media networks just like any other device. Throw the screen-grabs down to a thumb drive and there’s no loss. Upload those grabs and… you are at the mercy of the upload compression.”

Last generation, and this generation, users had concerns of leaving a console in its Rest mode, expressing concerns that this would shorten the consoles life. Speaking about this, McCarthy said “Rest mode will not shorten your console’s lifecycle. In fact if the fan is on it’s because it’s adding life to your console. Rest Mode uses VERY LITTLE power but auto-updates patches and system software updates. You do not have to be at ‘full power’ when downloading a file.”

And sadly, Data Backup hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but you can remain hopeful, “Data backup cannot be confirmed at this time. Don’t believe everything you read on the interwebs.”
