From Software has seen great success with its Souls series, of which Bloodborne is a spiritual successor, but things weren’t always so rosy. The developer faced issues in the early going with Demon’s Souls and brought in director Hidetaka Miyazaki to take over. For Miyazaki, in a recent interview with The Guardian, the desire to create something was inspired by ICO.

“When I heard it was a fantasy-action role-playing game, I was excited. I figured if I could find a way to take control of the game, I could turn it into anything I wanted. Best of all, if my ideas failed, nobody would care – it was already a failure.”

Miyazaki was originally interested in game development but joined Oracle Corporation instead. The night he played ICO is when things changed.

“That game awoke me to the possibilities of the medium. I wanted to make one myself.

“Now I’m president [of From Software] and I get to meet a lot of other company presidents. They’re such weird people. I’m fascinated by them. I use some of them as enemy characters in our games.”

It’s certainly been an amazing journey for Miyazaki thus far. Your thoughts on all this? Let us know in the comments.
