CD Projekt RED Warns Gamers About Buying Witcher 3 PC Keys Through GMG

Will gamers be able to play The Witcher 3 through GreenManGaming? CDPR's Rafal Jaki says "maybe."

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

While there is all kinds of excitement surrounding the impending release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, there now appears to be a bit of a disagreement over whether PC gamers will be able to get and play a copy through GreenManGaming (GMG). It appears there is a fight that has been slowly simmering between CD Projekt RED and GMG for a while now and when CDPR’s Rafal Jaki issued a warning about buying the game through on the online PC gaming site, confusion reigned.

Earlier on Wednesday, GreenManGaming announced a special promotion allowing users to purchase The Witcher 3 for just $40. The game’s developers responded by saying that they had not issued any digital keys to GMG and that fans of the series should steer clear. GMG responded by issuing a statement saying they have not been able to indirectly secure digital keys from third party distributors for the game because CDPR would not sell them keys directly, instead favoring the digital platform GOG. Confused yet?

The issue seems to boil down to this: CD Projekt RED is only allowing very specific retailers to sell the game and digital game keys directly. GreenManGaming is not one of those authorized retailers. However, GMG got around being left out of the loop by purchasing keys from authorized retailers. It appears this approach will work, according to Jaki, as long as the story as to how GMG got the keys is accurate. Issuing his own statement, Jaki ended with “GMG is not a CDPR partner for W3 but they still might sell Keys that will work.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is due out for the the PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 19.
