No Man’s Sky Dev Talks About Living Up To The Hype

Can Hello Games overcome the pressure?

No Man's Sky

There are very few games that are as anxiously awaited as No Man’s Sky. Heck, most of the gaming community is still waiting for an actual release date for the space exploration game. Expected to come out later this year, Hello Games still hasn’t told the general public when they’re getting their hot little hands on the game. That doesn’t mean the developers have gone completely radio silent.

The team has shown off stunning visuals from inside No Man’s Sky and the game’s creative director Sean Murray recently sat down with The Guardian to talk about a number of things, including the massive hype surrounding the project.

In particular, he knows that the company is walking a bit of a tightrope, considering just how anxious people are to play his IP. “People say to me: there’s never been a game that’s had this much hype and hasn’t disappointed everyone.” Murray told the paper.

It’s not hard to imagine why there is so much hype. The game is about as open world as any game we’ve heard about for a console and it does look really good. Murray was quick to point out that all the pictures and video Hello Games has released are actually from inside the game.

Murray also realizes that no matter what kind of words of caution he and his team give the public about their expectations, there are going to be gamers who get a bit unrealistic. Games are never going to be able to live up to what some expect out of them. “They project their own idea of the game onto what we’re doing,” Murray said. “Maybe that is the nature of hype: runaway excitement that can never be matched?”

No Man’s Sky is due out later this year for the PS4 and PC though an official release date is still unknown.
