Fallout 4, Bethesda Softworks’ next big open world RPG, has been confirmed to support mods on both PC and Xbox One. However, Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines, has revealed that mod tools won’t necessarily be available at launch. For now, the development team’s “entire focus is on finishing the game”.
Speaking to IGN, Hines said that proper functionality would be incorporated once the game is done because, “Nobody cares about mods if the game sucks. This has always been our philosophy. We shift energy to construction tools, the creation kit, and all of that stuff once the game is done, and we start to figure out what all of that is going to look like.”
This also creates an issue with regards to mods arriving on consoles. “The idea is that [the tools] will work on all platforms, but the truth is the system doesn’t exist. It’s still being built and worked on and it’s going to take awhile. It’s going to take clearly into next year because we can’t even start it…”
So take that for what you will. Fortunately, if it indeed does last for hundreds of hours, there will be plenty to do in Fallout 4 into the new year when it releases on November 10th.
