Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be bringing a brand new campaign with several new features not seen in the franchise before. However, for previous gen console owners, there will only be the multiplayer and Zombies mode available for player. Though the decision was made by Activision to cut the campaign on Xbox 360 and PS3, this was done due to the consoles’ inability to faithfully recreate it.

Speaking to GameSpot, producer Jason Blundell says he supported Activision’s decision. “My job is to push the current-gen consoles as far as I can. When I heard that an old-gen version was going to be made outside of Treyarch, and found out the things that would have to be cut in order for it to work, I was fully behind Activision’s decision to remove it.”

Though the consensus online is that many players don’t bother with the campaign mode, Blundell says it’s quite the opposite. “You say that fewer people are playing campaigns these days, but our metrics say different. This was an active topic at Treyarch, until our numbers showed us that, regardless of what you read on forums, players spend a good amount of time in all modes.”

Regardless, Blundell personally hoped that storytelling was an important part of the series going forward. “I’ll say this, and this is my personal view, the death of storytelling and the death of campaign is the death of society. As a medium, we have to tell stories. For Black Ops, it’s absolutely essential to continue the art of storytelling.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is out on November 6th for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
