Sony Wants To Grow PSN Into A ‘Global Entertainment Platform’

The success of the PS4 has Sony looking to use it for more than just games, somehow.

Sony has been having a very good year, especially when it comes to its gaming division thanks to the Playstation 4. During a conference call this week, the company made no bones about the fact it understood it needs to find a way to further capitalize on the console’s momentum with Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida talking about the plans the firm has to grow that part of their business.

Considering the company just announced the massive number of shipments the PS4 has seen over the last few months alone, it would be almost criminal if the firm wasn’t trying to find new ways to take advantage. The company also needs to press its sales advantage when it comes to the Xbox One, which has taken some big steps towards transitioning to something that is about more than just playing games. Yoshida seems to understand this, considering his comments during the earnings call.

“The game division can continue to seek scale by capitalizing on the strong momentum of the PS4.” the CFO said, according to DualShockers. In a different earnings call, the CFO went one further and said the company is actively looking at different ways it can turn the PS4 into a total entertainment platform using PSN. Of course, users can already download movies and television shows to their console, though it’s pretty clear the population of gamers who are doing that isn’t an impressive number just yet. It will be interesting to see what Sony does to change that in the near future.
