Though some of the major VR headsets are yet to be officially available, analyst firm SuperData believes they will become incredibly popular by the end of the 2017 calendar year with 70 million devices sold.

This is in the wake of the Samsung launching the Gear VR last week. SuperData stated that mobile VR sales will hit 18 million by 2015 end, VR hardware revenue would hit $8.8 billion and software sales would total $6.1 billion. The firm also believes that 31 percent of console gamers in America will purchase a PlayStation VR and 18 percent of PC players would go for Oculus Rift.

SuperData director of research Stephanie Llamas said that, “Initially, affordable smartphone devices will drive the bulk of sales as consumers first explore virtual reality before committing to the more expensive platforms.

“After this first wave, however, it will be especially console gamers that will spur growth of high-end VR devices.”

Both Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR release in 2016 so stay tuned for more details.
