Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida Explains The Lack Of New Game Announcements At PlayStation Experience

It comes from Sony hosting as many shows this year as they did.

The PlayStation Experience keynote last night was a colossal disaster, a poorly paced, fluffed out conference that showed us little to nothing of worth. A major part of this is the complete lack of actual new announcements at the event- though Ni no Kuni 2 looks incredible, it was also the only major new game announced.

Shuhei Yoshida tackled this question head on yesterday, in a question and answer session that was livestreamed on Twitch. Yoshida says, truthfully enough, that Sony has already had a massive year in terms of major announcements- over E3, Tokyo Game Show, and Paris Games Week, Sony announced The Last Guardian, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Final Fantasy VII, Shenmue 3, Detroit: Become Human, Gravity Rush 2, and Gran Turismo Sport, just to name a few. Sony said, then, that the plan was always to focus on smaller games at PlayStation Experience, rather than the bigger titles.

It’s a fair response, and I don’t begrudge Sony this predicament- holding four major game shows in a single year has to be draining. Sony probably stretched themselves too thin. My personal suggestion in this case would be for Sony to not hold that many shows, not unless they have enough announcements to actually justify that number. As it stands right now, last year’s show reversed a lot of goodwill that Sony has otherwise been garnering.
