Exactly how much Sony is expecting its PlayStation VR to sell is anybody’s guess- previously, they have made some statements to the effect of not expecting the headset to sell a whole lot, at least not right out of the gate. But the amount of time and development talent that they are dedicating to the platform seems to indicate that Sony has some hopes from the PlayStation VR.
Richard Marks, director of Sony PlayStation’s Magic Labs research division, discussed the headset’s potential sales performance in a recent interview with Fortune. “Our customers are already very aware of VR and are anticipating it,” Marks said. “Once the PlayStation VR goes out on the market, they’ll see so many in people’s homes that it will create this snowball effect.”
Of course, all of this assumes that VR will be accepted by the masses at all. Right now, all indications are that it goes the way of stereoscopic 3D- remember that? Sony’s biggest test, as well as Oculus’, HTC’s, and Samsung’s, will be selling the average consumer on the idea of consuming entertainment media with a funky headset on their heads, cutting them off from the larger world.
