PlayStation VR Needs An Additional, External Processing Unit, Which Is As Big As The Wii

Of course, the PS4 was going to be too weak to power the headset all by itself.

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset is surely some great tech, even though it seems far less attractive than ever, thanks to a disastrous showing at the PlayStation Experience earlier this month. However, it won’t be the kind of smooth, plug and play experience that you would have wanted it to be- as many have suspected, the PS4 alone is too weak to be able to support the kind of intensive VR experiences that Sony has been advertising for the headset.

Instead, Polygon has confirmed that the headset will need an additional external processor, to supplement the PS4’s power, and make VR possible. This external processor is what you will be plugging the headset into; the box itself plugs into the PS4, and is about as big as an original Wii.

It’s not all bad news- Sony also confirmed that the PlayStation VR will be comfortable to wear for everyone, thanks to a dial in the back that lets you adjust its size.

PlayStation VR is due to launch some time in 2016.
