Destiny The Taken King_Crucible 02

Ever wondered about the supposed skill-based matchmaking in Bungie’s Destiny? Design lead Lars Bakken took to the Bungie Weekly Update to talk about changes that were made after the launch of The Taken King.

Essentially, Bungie uses a “super-secret mathematical systems that measure your performance and rate you as a potential combatant.” There are different ratings for different playlists, even between normal Control and the Iron Banner. This was since “expanded … to cover more activities in the Crucible. In December, [Bungie] activated it in all playlists.”

The changes weren’t really made public “[i]n order to really put it through the paces, we needed the raw, unbiased data. That gave us great results that allowed us to learn how to make it better.”

Bungie will make more efforts to be transparent in the future and Bakken promises some changes to reduce the lag seen in Crucible. “In fact, there are some new changes coming in the near future that are intended to help reduce what we call latency (what you call “lag”). We’re looking through all the new data now, and we’ll be taking measures to improve the experience.

Once again, no ETA on when these changes will take effect. Stay tuned for more information on the same in the coming weeks.
