Yesterday, we reported that the eagerly anticipated PlayStation VR is apparently slated for a launch this Fall, according to the CEO of GameStop, the largest dedicated retailer of video game hardware, software, and accessories in North America. However, just a day later, Sony have responded to this assertion with a statement that categorically denies any such launch date.
“GameStop was speculating, and we have not released any further details on launch timing,” a Sony representative said via email to Game Informer.
As of right now, then, we still have no indication of a launch date for the PlayStation VR, beyond the fact that Sony does intend to launch it some time this year. A Fall release date does make sense (and also aligns with Sony’s launch strategies for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 3 Slim, PlayStation Move, and PlayStation 4), but at the same time, Sony may feel that launching the product – which they have admitted they do not see as being mass market, at least not right at first – would give them a better strategic advantage (especially since Oculus Rift and HTC Vive would both have been on the market long before Fall).
We’ll keep you posted.
