Unreal Engine 4 was apparently a big help to the team during the game's development.

Not everyone was sold on Days Gone when Sony showcased it at E3 this year- maybe that’s the reason that development studio Sony Bend keep feeling the need to come out and reiterate how strong the narrative will be in the game. And yet, it’s not necessarily the narrative that people are skeptical about, as it is the fact that Sony now have two zombie action games, between Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, and this.

But Sony Bend Studio Director Christopher Reese reiterated, yet again, in a chat that he had with Epic Games, that the game will in fact have a very strong narrative- which we can believe, based on the game’s debut (though we are curious about whether or not the game will be able to bring anything new with it to the table as far as zombie stories go).

More interestingly, we also learn that the game uses Unreal Engine 4- a modified variant of the game, but still. Apparently, the engine was a big help to Sony Bend during development, because Reese explains that it helped the studio during the prototyping phase to try out lots of things with minimal resources expended, until they found the direction for the game that they wanted. The engine also allows the team to iterate easily, allowing them a lot of flexibility in generating assets of the desired quality, and translating them in game.

It’s a ringing endorsement of Epic’s engine- then again, we already knew that it’s a pretty damn powerful piece of code.

Days Gone will launch exclusively on PS4 in 2017.
