The Elder Scrolls 6 – Bethesda Should Look Into Making Horses A Little More Useful

Beasts of burden.

Horses are the quintessential form of transportation over longer distances in The Elder Scrolls, but they’re also rather useless. Their own programming seems to be fairly basic, and really, other than getting from point A to point B, there doesn’t seem to be much point to having one. Bethesda should look into changing that.

I can’t believe I am going to draw a comparison to The Witcher 3 here, because Roach might go down as one of the most hilariously broken horses in gaming ever- but the fact is, even Roach was actually better than the horses in Skyrim effectively. Roach could, for instance, be used to offload excessive inventory, so you wouldn’t have to pick and choose what to keep and what to drop when you were out on a quest.

And considering how loot heavy Bethesda games seem to be becoming, an addition like that in the next Elder Scrolls game would definitely be much appreciated. Bethesda already let your human partners be inventory repositories- why not your horses, too? For when you’re out questing alone, the addition would be much appreciated, while even if you are out with a companion, they’d be useful, given the sheer amount of loot in their games at this point.

Horses usually manage to have some other use other than just being a means of fast transport- for instance, Zelda opens up entire new combat scenarios, and lets you access otherwise inaccessible areas, when you are on a horse. Bethesda would do well to take some cues from these games- give your horses some other use, in addition to simply being ‘faster way of getting from here to there.’
