Battle.Net Still Won’t Get Other Third Party Releases, Blizzard Reiterates

'This is not something we're jumping into lightly.'

A lot of eyebrows were raised last week when Activision confirmed that the PC version of Destiny 2 will be released over Blizzard’s Battle.net platform. This was interesting- until now, Battle.net has been used exclusively for Blizzard’s own releases, and Blizzard has not even once shown the inclination to bring other games to it. Did this portend a change in how the online storefront was going to be handled going forward?

Well… yes and no. In a statement, Blizzard reiterated that Battle.net would be used for its own releases only, especially since it was important for the company to maintain its quality standards. However, at the same time, it also conceded that it would look at the possibility of being the launcher for PC versions of Activision games in the future.

“Our focus in terms of supporting non-Blizzard games is solely around Destiny 2,” clarified Blizzard in a blog post. “Aside from potentially evaluating needs or opportunities for future Activision games, we don’t have any short or long-term plans to support third-party games with Battle.net.

“It’s important to us to maintain our quality standards for any experience or service we’re putting in front of our players, which represents a big investment of time and effort on our part, so this is not something we’re jumping into lightly.”

So that’s that, folks. Destiny 2 is due out later this year on PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC version due for release at a later date.
