Overwatch Competitive Play Undergoing Major Changes for Season 6

Skill Rating decay, season length, placement matches and more are changing.

After what was arguably the worst season ever for Competitive Play, Blizzard Entertainment has announced some big changes for Overwatch’s sixth season of Competitive, which starts on August 31st. These changes were outlined by director Jeff Kaplan in a new developer diary which you can see below.

Basically, seasons will last for two months instead of three. Competitive Points will be adjusted as a result but it was promised that players should receive the same amount in a year as previously. Skill Rating decay for Masters and above would be more forgiving with only five matches required to be played in a week as opposed to seven. Skill Rating will also only decay by 25 points for each day this quota isn’t met as opposed to 50 points.

Control maps will now be best-of-three like Quickplay instead of best-of-five while placement matches will apparently offer more accurate Skill Ratings. You can aslo expect better balanced matches but matchmaking times will be longer.

Overwatch Competitive Play season 5 ends on August 28th. In the meantime, Blizzard has revealed its next big map Junkertown at Gamescom 2017. Its newest animated short will debut at the company’s Reveal Ceremony today.
