Call of Duty: WW2 Could Precede More Historical Games in Franchise

Activision's Eric Hirshberg noted that past few years might have had "one future game too many."

Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: WW2 sees the series going back to what made it famous with the World War 2 setting and emphasis on realistic, historical combat. After years of sci-fi shooters and modern combat, it’s being looked at as a breath of fresh air. However, this may not be the last historical Call of Duty title to come from Activision in the future.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg was asked by Game Informer whether there would be more World War 2 titles or even games set in other time periods for Call of Duty. He replied, “Well, you know I can’t reveal things on the slate that are several years off. But no I don’t necessarily see it as a one-off; I think that World War II and historical settings more broadly are very rich territory, and I think there’s every possibility that that could become an area that we explore more than once.”

Hirshberg said that the push for more futuristic titles like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3 and last year’s Infinite Warfare was due to players being “fatigued” with historical games. However, with Infinite Warfare not selling as well as previous iterations, Hirshberg said, “Not to make any comment on the quality of the game from last year, but I think that while there were a lot of innovations and a lot of fun new things that players got to do, it was one future game too many.

Call of Duty: WW2 will be coming to the Xbox One, PS4 and PC on November 3rd. The multiplayer beta recently concluded on Xbox One and PS4 and will hit PC “soon” as per the developer.
