Star Wars Battlefront 2 Crates

There’s be a ton of discussion kicked up around loot boxes in 2017, thanks in no small part to Activision Blizzard’s Destiny 2, Overwatch and EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II. While he is no longer with the company and instead working with the Smithsonian on their Videogame Pioneers Archive, Bethesda founder Chris Weaver can be credited with kicking off many of the company’s most enduring properties, such as The Elder Scrolls.

In a recent interview with Glixel, Weaver would make his thoughts known on the loot box controversy surrounding some of the biggest games of the season. His biggest takeaway is that constantly reaching around for the players wallet is breaking immersion, but games may have to rise in price to cover the huge development costs.

This nickel and dime approach to payment may well backfire as it interferes with the flow of a game and disallows for players to lose themselves in its play-world. Players may have to absorb the increasing costs of creating AAA games to allow publishers to remain profitable,” said Weaver.

Gamingbolt recently published an editorial suggesting solutions to the alleged need for greedy monetization practices that you can find here if you’re interested. Would you be ok picking up the cheque for rising costs, or do you not buy that gaming can’t afford to move on without squeezing players dry? Let us know in the comments.
