Development

Having just finished pre-planning for the project, Director Kohei Yamashita and his team began development just before 2015 ended. The team wanted to create a Valkyria game with a more worldwide appeal that called back to the original title, as opposed to the more Japanese minded titles with anime tropes. The team would study records of World War II and the various armies involved as reference for the new characters in the title.

The team first launched Valkyria Chronicles Remastered to allow new fans to be introduced to the kind of game it is on a modern platform, and producer Kei Mikami has stated that Valkyria Chronicles 4 acts as something of a companion story wise, since the game takes place at the same time, but stars a whole new cast and in a new location, on the opposite front of the war.

Whereas Valkyria Chronicles 2 and had anime tropes to appeal to the high Japanese user base of the PlayStation Portable, Valkyria Chronicles 4 intends to be more approachable in its narrative and story-telling, opening the game up to a wider appeal. The team studied World War II troops and the larger conflict for reference material.

On March 15, 2018 the western launch window for the game to hit PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch would be revealed. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is expected to make its way west by Fall 2018.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 would finally be released in Japan on March 21st, 2018, with a 35 out of 40 from Famitsu marking it as a high quality title.

Two days following from the Japanese release, Sega announced a season pass for the title, which would grant players access to all of the expanded DLC support as it released. Four new scenarios and several fan service swimsuit costumes are included in the season pass.

Story

Valkyria Chronicles 4

The continent of Europa is torn between the two warring factions of the Atlantic Federation and the Eastern Imperial Alliance during the second Europan War. Taking place during the events of Valkyria Chronicles, Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place on a different front with a different cast.

The Federation in a desperate bid to end the war engage Operation Northern Cross, a near suicidal mission to attempt to capture the imperial capital for the Federation and end the war in one swift motion. Commander Claude Wallace and his Squad E friends are the people for the job. The mission will force them to cross deadly terrain including very hard winter conditions and right though the deadly Imperial war machine. They may also learn some hard truths that will challenge their very beliefs.

The cast of the original game, Squad 7, will return in this game in some capacity, and are playable within a bonus mission.

Gameplay

Valkyria Chronicles 4

As with the original game, combat is conducted from a low to the ground, strategy turn based system which most recently can be compared to Codename S.T.E.A.M and Fire Emblem. Characters move across the battlefield and consider things like positioning, cover and flanking opportunities.

Weather conditions will also need to be considered during battles, with many special movement or vision restrictions that can come into play depending on environment. Harsh snow can slowly drain health if you remain in it, and finish off fallen allies quickly unless you can get to them. Fog can keep you from spotting enemies from a distance. Fire Spots can be destroyed to create a blaze on the battlefield; either by you or your enemies and harsher elements like Avalanches can immediately kill anyone caught in the destruction.

The only new class known currently is the Grenadier, who lobs his various grenades at enemy forces. Should the player have boots on the ground that can see an enemies position and feed that to the Grenadier, they can attack without revealing their position.

The game introduces a new Brave system, which comes into play when an allied character is in grave peril. Players gain the choice to use one of two skills with this system. ‘Entrust’ consumes 1 CP and boosts the stats of the whole squad in return. Otherwise, the player can use ‘Stand Up’ to give themselves one more AP point, which grants them a chance to move and attack for one action, while remaining completely invulnerable to damage.

Characters

Valkyria Chronicles 4

Claude Wallace is the first lieutenant of Squad E, and their commanding officer. The protagonist character, he’s a passionate leader who commands his squad with ease. His heavy weapons support is his Grenadier, Riley Miller, a technician. Riley is an ambitious woman who’s cheerful attitude helps push her squad to victory.

Claude’s two division officers are Raz and Kai Schulen. Raz is has no last name, and is one of the “Darcsen” people who’ve been persecuted through history. Kai is a feared sharpshooting prodigy known as the “One Shot Killer”. Beyond these direct squadmates, there’s Angelica Farnaby, Karen Stewart and Minerva Victor. Angelica is a mysterious, caring civilian woman who’s suffering from amnesia. She’ll gain an inexplicable popularity with the soldiers. Her cheerful personality is part of what made her catch on with the Squad and she’s often their light in the darkness.

Karen is a  gentle souls and she’s very good in a medic role. The young woman grew up as the only girl in a house of men, gifting her with a good understanding of males and treating their injuries. Minerva is the sociable, at least to everyone besides Claude; whom she considers a rival, commanding officer of Squad F, who Claude and his Squad E will occasionally work with.

On the Imperial side, Belgar is the noble supervisor of the X-0, the special test unit for the imperial science institution. He has a commanding presence and considers the X-0 soldiers as his chess pieces. Belgar’s right and left hands are Chiara Rocino and Nikola Graf respectively. The pair were raised as sisters at the Imperial Research Institution, and both act as bodyguards and eliminators. Both have a mean sadistic streak, but Nikola is also rather malicious.

Out in the field, Forseti is the crippled tactical commander of the X-0 who will constantly face off against Claude and his unit. His injury means he cannot take a personal hand in the battle, but he can maintain composure under the harshest conditions and stay confident in his decisions. They are also backed up by Crymaria Levinc, one of the powerful warrior race known as the Valkyria. Known as “Witch of the Snowstorm”, she suffers from a strong inferiority complex thanks to the experiments she suffered by the X-0, but is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. She is never without her wolf, Fenrir
