DOOM Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro Comparison: Microsoft’s Console Takes The Lead

Head to head comparison between the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro versions of DOOM.

The last couple of weeks have been rather interesting for the Xbox One X as far as support goes for the older game releases. One of the best shooters of this generation, 2016’s DOOM recently got a patch to support the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. Fans have been asking Bethesda and id Software for an enhancement patch to support the iterative consoles for a while now and it’s great to see the developers going out of the way to finally release a patch for both systems.

DOOM was a pretty amazing looking shooter on the base PS4 and Xbox One, prioritizing frame rate over resolution, and it seems that the trend continues here on the new consoles. Both versions run at a dynamic resolution in order to run the game at 60 frames per second. As expected the Xbox One X version manages to achieve a higher range of resolution compared to its PS4 Pro counter part. On the Xbox One X, the game runs anywhere from native 4K resolution to 2702 X 1520 whereas the PS4 Pro version runs at around 2560×1440 and lower. This patch is a classic case where the developer wants to run the game at higher frame rates at the cost of resolution. However, there are some frame rate drops on both platforms but overall we are largely looking at a title that rarely drops below 60fps.

Back in 2016, we had stated that DOOM is a true benchmark for PS4 and Xbox One’s ideal performance and this holds true even for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. DOOM is a rather demanding title and seeing it run so well on these iterative consoles is a sight to behold. The lack of a complete native 4K resolution on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro might be disappointing for some, but we would take rock solid 60fps over slightly reduced resolution any day.
