Overwatch’s Symmetra Moving From Support to Defense Role

Blizzard programmer promises that this will be a "fairly dramatic change".

For all the success that Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch has seen since launching in May 2016, the game has seen its share of balance issues. One such hero that’s seen a number of changes but hasn’t quite fit into any meta is Symmetra.

Though capable of setting up turrets like Torjborn, Symmetra can also deploy a teleporter to bring allies back to the point faster or a Shield Generator to provide 75 Shields for as long as it’s up. Regardless of how useful that all sounds, Symmetra has seen next to no play in the Overwatch League and is often scorned upon in high rank play.

To address this, Blizzard will be reworking Symmetra’s role, quite literally at that. She’ll be going from a Support to Defense hero as per programmer Tim Ford when speaking to InvenGlobal.

“We are discussing the change right now, and although we can’t tell you the details of each change, we would still like to let you know it will be a fairly dramatic change. One thing we can tell you is that Symmetra will turn from a support hero to a defense hero after the remake. Our aim is to make the usage of Symmetra even more flexible from it,” said Ford.

Don’t expect her rework to come up any time soon – the development team just got finished reworking Hanzo with new abilities. He’s currently available to try on the PC Public Test Realm server. Stay tuned for more information when details of Symmetra’s rework eventually come up.
