Next Battlefield Will Feature “Ongoing Service”, Multiplayer Innovations

EA is extremely upbeat about the next Battlefield.

Battlefield 1

In a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson spoke a bit more about the next Battlefield, tentatively swinging between Battlefield 5 and Bad Company 3 depending on the rumour of the day. Wilson noted that there would be “compelling single-player” modes but also added that there would be an “ongoing service” of some kind.

Wilson further added that the game would build on Battlefield 1’s success, advancing the “state of the art for the franchise” while still providing the same signature gameplay.

“This will be a deep and fully featured shooter and ongoing service that will evolve with major new experiences for our community, beginning right from launch. Building on the success of Battlefield 1 and taking inspiration from DICE’s core DNA, this new game will advance the state of the art for the franchise, while still delivering the signature gameplay and Battlefield moments that have captivated and grown our global community.

“All of the things that a Battlefield fan would expect out of a multiplayer game from DICE in the Battlefield universe will be there, while additional innovations in how we’re thinking about the future of multiplayer in first-person shooters will also be there, both at launch and over time as part of a live service.” Could one of those “additional innovations” be a Battle Royale mode as has been previously rumoured? We’re not really sure at this point but EA is certainly interested in pursuing that market.

A teaser for the next Battlefield sometime before E3 2018 but we know that the game will be playable during EA’s Play event. A closed beta will likely go live around that time, allowing players all around the world to experience the multiplayer. Given how Battlefield 1 took place during World War 1, will the next game actually return to World War 2? Time will tell.

The next Battlefield will be out in October for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
