God of War Sequel Will Be “Bigger, Better, Longer”, Says Developer

"It must be bigger than this, better than this."

God of War is one of the best games of this generation, something that it accomplishes thanks to an unusually deft mix of extreme quality mixed with a lot of quantity- you see, the game has an exceptional amount of things to do, and almost all of them are utterly fantastic.

But for God of War 2, or whatever the sequel to the game ends up being called, the developers want to go even bigger and better (and also longer, which… okay, God of War is one of those games that could actually stand to be a bit shorter, if I am being honest). Speaking at the Game Access conference to Sector.sk, Nate Stephens, the environmental artist for God of War, spoke about the development team’s aspirations for the sequel.

We still want to be God of War,” Stephens said. “What I want to say is, the first battle in this game when you’re fighting The Stranger is really an epic fight. It ends with you two destroying the entire environment around you. It was really hard to create, I myself was working on the lighting for this level, and it was super hard to get it to work.

“So if we have a meeting with Thor or Odin, naturally, it must be bigger than this, better than this. This game was very good, but we think we can make it even better. And of course, it must be a little bit bigger. If we do another game – no one actually said that we are doing it – it will be bigger, better, longer.”

Which, you know what, I won’t say no to. Except for the “longer” part. Have optional content that can make the game longer should the player choose to engage with it, sure, but apart from that, I hope Sony Santa Monica make the next game a bit shorter!

God of War is available now, exclusively on the PS4.
