Remember when we said that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey needed gameplay footage to complete its round of leaks? It seems gameplay has actually leaked courtesy of a video interview by Unilad Gaming on Facebook. The video has since been reposted and features narrative director Mel MacCoubrey talking about the story and setting.
There’s plenty of information to glean from the video as well (thanks to ResetEra admin SweetNicole). Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set in 431 BC during the Peloponnesian War. It’s described as a time of war and peace with contrasts between the land and see.
The player can choose two characters – Kassandra and Alexios – who have been raised as Spartan warriors since birth. Each character has the same story, that of their family being ripped apart at birth. The main plot of Odyssey takes place 17 years after this tragedy on Kefalonia. The protagonist has trained to become a mercenary and after taking on a contract, the world becomes open to explore.
Meanwhile, the present day sees Layla from Assassin’s Creed Origins returning and searching for knowledge on the First Civilization. The First Civilization has mythology mixed in and there are themes of order vs. freedom thrown in. Events will still play out as they have historically but players can make choices (including through the dialogue system) to affect the outcomes in their own stories.
Naval combat is described as “seamless” as players can find ships with different abilities, recruit anyone for certain benefits (like increased ship health) and even ram other ships, breaking them apart. There’s gear to collect, customize and upgrade and the map is touted as the biggest in the franchise’s history.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is out on October 5th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. What are your thoughts on the story and setting? Let us know below.
