A lot of people have had questions about the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake– when exactly might we get to see it? We know development on the game has been troubled, and Square Enix is infamous for protracted development cycles. We also know development was rebooted recently. So what’s going on with that?
Speaking with IGN, Tetsuya Nomura, director of the remake, revealed that the game is out of pre-production now, and in actual, active development at the moment, in parallel with Kingdom Hearts 3. “It’s not just in the early concept stages. We are actually in development. So right now, I’ve been putting 100 percent into Kingdom Hearts and 100 percent into Final Fantasy 7 and 100 percent into Kingdom Hearts and going back and forth,” he said.
Which sounds reassuring- but do remember that just because Square, and Nomura, have started development on a game isn’t in and of itself indicative of anything, especially in terms of expecting release dates. As a reminder, Final Fantasy 15 began development as Final Fantasy Versus 13 over 10 years before it finally saw a release. It’s good to see that development on Final Fantasy 7 Remake has begun in earnest, but I’m not holding my breath for a release any time soon.
May Square Enix prove me wrong.
