Though the current Nintendo Switch model is a little over 19 months old, Nintendo is currently working on a new version. According to The Wall Street Journal (via ResetEra), which spoke to different suppliers and those with “direct knowledge of the plan”, this new Switch would release in 2019.

As of now, new hardware and software features along with their cost is being discussed according to those in the know. However, an improvement to the display is currently an option. How it will compete with the latest in mobile technology remains to be seen, but don’t expect the Apple iPhone X’s OLED panel to be used.

WSJ tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki had further details on Twitter. He noted that the new version could arrive by Summer in 2019, and also that “3rd publishers hope new Switch would give clear hint what would happen on 3DS line.”

The Nintendo Switch was a stunning success for the company in 2017, especially coming off of its previous generation slump with the Wii U. The console has already sold 17.79 million units as of April 2018 and received a consistent supply of exclusives, third party titles, and indie support this year. As the Wall Street Journal notes though, the new Switch could be a proactive move to ensure the console stays competitive.
