Hellpoint Dev on PS5 and Xbox Scarlett: ‘I Don’t Expect Anything More From Them From a Tech Point of View’

The creative director of the upcoming sci-fi RPG feels current-gen consoles offer pretty much everything they need to already.

We’ve heard a lot from plenty of developers about what they hope to see out of next-generation consoles. While some have spoken about hopefully reasonable pricing, others have talked about having better porting facilities, while others still have mentioned wanting to see photorealistic visuals.

Recently, we also spoke to Mathieu Boudreau of Cradle Games, who’s serving as the creative director of the upcoming Soulslike sci-fi RPG Hellpoint, and among the many questions we asked him, one was about what he expects from PS5 and the next Xbox. His answer? Not much, really. He said that while they can offer “cool gimmicks”, in his view, current-gen machines are accomplishing pretty much everything they need to as it is.

“You might find the answer underwhelming, but I don’t expect anything more from machines from a tech point of view, except perhaps to make development easier and faster,” Boudreau said to GamingBolt. “I think they can offer cool gimmicks, but the game development landscape allows to do pretty much anything ever since 2005 and now the innovation challenges rely on great design and great community involvement.”

Personally, I wouldn’t necessarily go along with that statement. If Microsoft’s recent xCloud announcement, and reports about what Sony might be looking to implement in the PS5, are anything to go by, they’re certainly looking to do some impressive stuff with their next generation consoles. And then there’s Nintendo, who may not always do the most conventional stuff, but do somehow always end up accomplishing something completely unprecedented. What’s your take on this? Tell us in your comments.

Cradle Games’ Hellpoint is slated for an early 2019 release for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for our full interview with Boudreau.
