Smash Mobile App

In today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate blowout, Nintendo confirmed that the upcoming crossover fighter will be getting a mobile companion app service. It will be called Smash World, and it is due out in 2019.  The service will actually not, as you may expect, focus on player stats, such as win and loss ratios, but rather, on sharing Smash Bros. Ultimate content.

This includes things like screenshots and videos (including, I assume, match replays and clips), and it will be free to use for everyone. I assume, based on the Splatoon 2 service Nintendo runs, that this will actually be a part of the Nintendo Switch Online app. Speaking of which, Nintendo also confirmed voice chat support for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate via their Nintendo Switch Online app.

In more online idiosyncrasies, Nintendo did recommend that players who are serious about online play should play Smash online via a wired connection, which for a Switch requires a USB to LAN adaptor. Personally, I only play Smash online for fun, not for glory, but I don’t know how well this bodes for the netcode, especially when the series is infamous for always failing on this front.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on Nintendo Switch on December 7. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out the trailer for the game’s adventure mode.
