Incineroar, Ken, and Piranha Plant Announced as Newcomer Fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Yes, Piranha Plant. As in the plant from Super Mario Bros.

In today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct stream that aired this morning, Nintendo announced the final new fighters joining the roster in the game. And they’re a very interesting bunch all around.

The final two characters rounding off the base roster in the game will be Ken from Street Fighter, who will actually be an Echo of Ryu (who’s already in), and Incineroar, the final evolution of Litten, the fire starter Pokemon in Sun/Moon. These two were pretty safe bets—Ken is literally the original “echo” fighter, so him getting in was always more or less guaranteed, while every Smash game has added at least one new playable Pokemon, and Incineroar is one of the most popular Pokemon from the new batch.

Their fighting styles are especially interesting, with Incineroar looking like a full physical wrestler with suplexes and submission style moves (which is true to how he is portrayed in the games).

Then there was the final new character announced—Piranha Plant. In true “WTF” Smash character tradition, Piranha Plant is a fighter based on… the plant. From Mario. I’m not joking, either. His move set is the most interesting thing ever. He won’t be available in the base game, but will be free for everyone who buys the game by January 31. If you don’t buy the game by then, he will be available as purchasable DLC later on.

You can check out the full Direct that included all these announcements below. Ken and Incineroar are introduced at the very beginning, while the Piranha Plant introduction begins at the 33:06 mark. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches for Nintendo Switch on December 7.
