New Sony Job Listings Hinting At PSN And PS Now Improvements For Next Gen

Sony looks to be "building the next generation PlayStation backbone."

It comes as no surprise to anyone that as the PS4 and the Xbox One enter their twilight years, both Sony and Microsoft are gearing up for the next generation of their console hardware- and what we have here today is more evidence of that. As per a couple of job listings put up by Sony, the company is looking to recruit people to help them improve their online infrastructure as well, with what seems to be an added amount of focus on their cloud streaming service, PlayStation Now.

A job listing posted for the position of Senior Network Operations Engineer mentions “robust, low latency game streaming services to PlayStation Now customers around the globe”, while also mentioning that work on the same will be part of Sony’s efforts to “build the next generation PlayStation backbone”.

The listing reads: “As a primary member of the Network Engineering team you will be responsible for the development, support and mid to long term considerations of an advanced global IP network that adheres to the highest standards to provide robust, low latency game streaming services to PlayStation Now customers around the globe.”

Another job listing for the position of Staff Software Engineer mentions the “next generation platform” for PlayStation Network, mentioning Sony’s efforts for “technology transformation” for the same as it looks to support its growth. “The next generation data platform serves the global, fast growing PlayStation Network customer base,” the posting reads. “This key role will lead the technology transformation of the network data platform including existing and new services supporting the dramatic customer growth on the platform.”

While Sony’s drive to expand PSN is, by all means, to be expected, what’s interesting is their added focus on PlayStation Now and their cloud streaming services as well. With Microsoft putting considerable resources into making xCloud a force to be reckoned with in the coming years, it should be interesting to see how Sony bolsters PS Now in the spirit of competition.
