When Nintendo announced Piranha Plant as a DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate about a month before the game’s launch, they took a lot of people by surprise. Sure, Nintendo, Smash, and series creator Masahiro Sakurai are all known for doing some pretty weird stuff, but Piranha Plant is a plant, and not really a character. Regardless, the little that we saw of it in action in its reveal was very interesting. A release date for its arrival to the game wasn’t announced back then, but it’s been narrowed down now.

Through an update sent within the game itself, Nintendo has confirmed that Piranha Plant will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate some time in February. A more specific release date hasn’t been given, but if February’s the launch month, we can probably expect a more specific date soon. Of course, anyone who has bought the game till now (till January 31st, in fact) will receive the DLC for free- everyone else will have to purchase it.

There’s plenty more coming by way of DLC characters after Piranha Plant as well. Out of the remaining five, Persona 5 protagonist Joker will be next in line to join the Smash Ultimate roster, with Dragon Quest 3’s Erdrick being heavily rumoured as one of the five as well. That definitely seems to be in line with Nintendo’s words on the nature of upcoming DLC characters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently available on Nintendo Switch.
