Over 90 per cent of the game's shipments managed to sell through.

Anthem may have had a less than stellar debut in the UK, but surprisingly enough, it managed to perform rather well in Japan in its first week on the market. It’s surprising because it’s the kind of game that Japanese audiences don’t usually care much for, and is made by a developer and publisher who don’t have much of a foothold in the region.

The game managed to sell nearly 78,000 units with three days on the market, and now, thanks to a report by Japanese retail sales data tracker Media Create, we have an even fuller picture of how successful the debut week was for the game.

Media Create is reporting that the game nearly sold out at retail on launch, selling over 92 per cent of its first week shipments, the vast amount of which also happened to be on the PS4 (which isn’t surprising, given that the Xbox One has a marginal – if that – market in Japan). In fact, had the game not started going out of stock, it’s possible that it would have sold even more, the report suggests. Sales for the game were around the same level as those for The Division back when it launched in 2016.

Anthem developer BioWare has been working away to address the criticisms the game has been subject to since launch. There have been multiple patches, while a roadmap for an upcoming season of content was also revealed. Anthem is currently available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC- read our review of the game through here.
