Days Gone is an open world survival horror action adventure title developed by SIE Bend Studio and published by Sony. It is Bend’s first new IP since Syphon Filter, with the studio having worked on handheld spinoff titles such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Resistance: Retribution in the years preceding Days Gone.

Development

Days Gone was unveiled an announced at E3 2016. The game had been in development since 2013, and entered full production in 2015. It was originally slated to launch in 2018, but was delayed to February 22, 2019. In October of 2018, Sony delayed the game once again, this time by two months to April 26, 2019, citing needing more time to polish the game as their reason to do so.

Days Gone has been developed using Unreal Engine 4. It is co-directed by John Garvin (creative director) and Jeff Ross (game director). The game’s main protagonist, Deacon St. John, is voiced and played by Sam Witwer. The developers also confirmed that they have post-launch DLC planned for the game. In March 2019, it was also confirmed that Days Gone would be approximately 30 hours long, and 6 hours of its runtime would be cutscenes.

The developers chose the Pacific Northwest as the game’s setting to explore the region’s rich, dense, and varied topography, which they felt hadn’t been represented much in video games before. The weather patterns of the region were also something they wanted to implement in their game.

Story

Days Gone takes place in the Pacific Northwest, and follows Deacon St. John as a protagonist. Two years ago, the world was ravaged by a deadly plague that killed a large part of the population and turned many others into ravenous, mutated, and zombified creatures known as Freakers. The survivors now struggle to survive against these deadly beasts, while outlaws and bandits also roam freely.

Deacon St. John used to be a biker in the past before the outbreak, but after a tragic event, his wife, Sarah, is presumed dead. In the post-apocalypse, Deacon survives as a mercenary. As a mercenary, Deacon primarily hunts down bounties, tracking and killing people with prices on their heads.

Gameplay

Days Gone is an open world title, and places an extreme emphasis on using Deacon’s bike as its primary means of transportation. The player is allowed to upgrade and customize the bike throughout the game to improve its performance in several areas, as well as add modifications. The bike also allows players to store items, with Deacon’s own inventory space being limited, and the player having to rely on the extra space provided by the bike to store extra items and weapons.

The bike remains persistent in the world, which means that when a player gets off and starts moving on foot, the bike stays where it is, and players then have to go back to it when they wish to use it again. In certain cases, the bike also needs to be hidden from bandits and other enemies. The bike can also break down or get damaged, and the player has to find components and parts in the world to fix and repair the vehicle to get it moving again. The bike also runs on fuel, and can thus run out. In such circumstances, the player has to look for fuel in the game’s world to refill Deacon’s bike.

There are several kinds of zombies out in the open world in Days Gone, such as Swarmers – aggressive and extremely agile zombies – or Newts – younger zombies who tend to stay away from other humans and creatures, and only attack when provoked or if they sense their target is weak – or Screamers – who can summon Swarmers by screaming if they should ever spot prey (such as the player). Freakers – specifically, Swarmers – often travel in massive hordes that can be more than a hundred strong at times. Hordes travel in the game’s world dynamically, and players can choose how they wish to approach them- they can be avoided, or the player can attempt to clear them out. This can be done through a combination of weapons, using traps, making use of environmental hazards, or even using the bike.

Freakers also come in more than just human form. The wildlife in Days Gone’s world also fell victim to the outbreak, and players can come across zombified bears, wolves, ravens, and many other animals. Beyond Freakers, the game’s world is littered with outlaws, bandits, and thieves, who can at times ambush Deacon to attempt to steal his belongings and kill him. The world of Days Gone also has dynamic weather patterns, including storms, rainfall, and more, as well as a day and night cycle. Freakers are slow and weak during the day, but grow stronger and more ferocious at night. There are also settlements of survivors in the world.

Days Gone also incorporates survival horror mechanics, which means players have to scrounge the world for resources and materials. These are then used for crafting, upgrades, and many other things. Players can also unlock fast travel points throughout the world. These come in the form of Freaker nests, which players have to burn down, before clearing them of all Freakers. Once cleared, they become unlocked as fast travel points. In the open world, the player can also use Deacon’s tracking skills to highlight tracks.

There are also safe houses scattered throughout the game, where players can restock ammo, or go to sleep to pass time, such as during nighttime, when Freakers are most active and dangerous. In combat, players can either take on a head on approach, or utilize stealth, since ammo consumption is key to survival. Days Gone also allows the player to use dynamic hordes to their advantage, and attract them with noise to leas them into enemy camps. Melee weapons can also be crafted, but can be damaged and broken. There is also a mechanic known as Combat Focus, which allows the player to slow down time and aim with more accuracy.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
