Final Fantasy 7 is famously the singular moment in time that Nintendo’s third party dominance came to an end, something that they have since never been able to reverse. With the onset of the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64, SquareSoft realized that cartridges, which Nintendo was using for the N64, were not enough to contain their vision for the game. As a result, they announced they would be exclusively supporting the PlayStation, causing a mass exodus of third parties from Nintendo in their wake.

It was a cartridge based home console that caused Final Fantasy 7 to leave the Nintendo fold, so it’s ironic that it’s a cartridge based home console that sees the game launch on a Nintendo system for a very first time. As previously announced, Final Fantasy 7 is now available for Nintendo Switch, as well as Xbox One—marking the very first time ever that the game has been available on non-PlayStation home consoles, ever (it has previously been available on PC in addition to PlayStation, however).

Nintendo seems to have a sense of humor about the whole thing, as their tweets making the announcement show (you can see them below). There’s also a launch trailer for you to chew on, so make sure to check it out too.
