Borderlands 3 Trailer May Be Hiding Its Release Date In Plain Sight, According To A Wacky Fan Theory

It’s either October 1 or January 10. Time to place your bets.

Borderlands Mask of Mayhem

Borderlands 3 was finally announced yesterday, ending a wait that seemed interminably long to fans who have been waiting for the next true entry in the series for years now. However, at the time, we got just the trailer and nothing else—we don’t even know when the game is coming out, for example.

Except—we might know that. Because the trailer for Borderlands 3 might actually be hiding that information in plain sight. According to a crazy fan theory that would make Hideo Kojima fans blush, the extremely conspicuous numbers that show up on the side of the building in the trailer—“01” and “10”—represent a date. 01 10 could either mean 1st October or January 10, and there’s enough reason to suppose it could be either.

Borderlands’ tenth anniversary is this October, and it seems like Gearbox would want to hit that, after all. Alternatively, however, Gearbox is based in America, and uses the American format for dates, which means the month comes first—ergo, 01 10 could be January 10 (2020).

These dates fall on Tuesday and Friday respectively—which are days that games release, so that checks out by default. Maybe this crazy theory is on to something. Or maybe it’s just… a crazy theory.

We’ll find out soon enough.
