RAGE 2 Isn’t a Games-as-a-Service Title, id Studio Director Says

Tim Willits says the game is all rage, no GaaS.

id Studios and Avalanche Studios’ RAGE 2 is shaping up to be quite a wild and colorful ride, as evidenced by the game’s over-the-top and fun trailers that have highlighted the game’s sense of humor and its many ridiculous weapons and abilities. As far as post-launch content goes, while we know that expansions and DLC are planned, not a lot has been said about long term support until now.

id Studio Director Tim Willits recently sat down with GameSpot to talk about RAGE 2’s ongoing support. While he says the game will see post-launch content and will have events – though what “events” entails isn’t defined – he says he doesn’t see RAGE 2 as a games-as-a-service title. He also seems to find the term itself too vague and hard to define.

“No [RAGE 2 isn’t games as a service], it will just be a supported game,” said Willits. “I don’t know, it’s so hard to… like someone needs to come up with a perfect definition of what a ‘games-as-a-service’ game actually is. Many people have different ideas of that, and I may have confused people originally when I started talking about this. What we’re planning on doing is creating some updates and content for this game after we launch. So, we monitor the game, we monitor the players, we act in the community, we’re gonna support it, we’re gonna update it. It’s not like a subscription or a free-to-play game. But it will be supported.”

So there’s post-launch content, but it seems doubtful that the open world shooter will see the same type of continuous content dumps as something like Anthem or The Division 2- which seems fair, seeing as RAGE 2 is a single player shooter. RAGE 2 is out May 14th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
