Cyberpunk 2077 and Tabletop Game Cyberpunk 2020 Share the Same Timeline

Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith puts some misconceptions to rest.

Cyberpunk 2077

Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, has been working closely with CD Projekt RED on their adaptation of the same, the upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Of late, there had been reports based on mistranslations that the game would not be set in the same timeline as the tabletop RPG, and would instead be set in an alternate one. Pondsmith, however, recently set the record straight.

Taking to Reddit, Pondsmith confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be set in the same timeline as the tabletop games, and will be from Cyberpunk RED (which follows from Cyberpunk 2020, which in turn follows from Cyberpunk 2013). He went on to confirm that more details on this will be revealed at a later time.

“There’s still an incorrect interview floating around the interwebs that states that Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk 2020 are separate timelines,” he wrote. “To clear this up, I am posting RIGHT HERE AND NOW that the timeline is unified, with the path moving from Cyberpunk 2013 thru Cyberpunk 2020, then through Cyberpunk RED and up to Cyberpunk 2077.

“Lord knows, we spent enough time hashing the details out over the past six months. Expect more on this later.”

We’ve recently received some insight into Cyberpunk 2077 and its development, with developers billing the likes of Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines and Deus Ex as inspirations, and how they impact the game’s non-linearity. Read more on that through here.

Cyberpunk 2077 is due out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but it doesn’t currently have a release date. We’ll be seeing more of it at E3 2019– but be warned that it might quite look quite different from how it looked this time last year.
