RAGE 2 is out now, eight years after the launch of the first game in the series, and developers id Software and Avalanche Studios have already got a great deal of upcoming content mapped out over the new few months. But id Software are looking even beyond that, and are hoping they’ll get to work on a sequel- and that they won’t have to wait eight years this time.

Speaking in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, id Software boss Tim Willits spoke about the possibility of a RAGE 3, saying that he hopes they’ll get to work on a sequel “as soon as possible”, highlighting the ridiculous and over-the-top nature of the world of RAGE and the creative freedom it affords them as developers.

“I hope so,” he said, when asked if there will be a sequel. “Yes, is the answer to that question. We’ve always loved this franchise because it’s such a fun setting. We can do what we want. We were once talking about riding on giant cockroaches. What other game can you have a conversation where that’s a legitimate conversation you can have?! It’s a crazy, fun, exciting franchise and I hope we can make a third one as soon as possible.”

If the sequel does end up happening, it’ll be interesting to see if Avalanche Studios will return as co-developers, or if id Software will want to take the lead this time and develop the game entirely in-house. Given RAGE 2’s reliance on the Apex Engine, the former might be likely.

It’s a bit too soon for that though. RAGE 2 only just launched, and is currently available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In our review, we called it “an accomplished first person shooter, but a bland and disappointing open world experience.” Read our full review through here.
