The experience with a Total War title doesn’t end at launch. Many players are embarking on a journey with The Creative Assembly, one that depends on post-launch DLC and updates. Total War: Three Kingdoms will also have post-launch DLC, but is trying something new with Chapter Packs.

Associate community manager James High stated on the official Total War blog, “We’re taking a slightly different approach to DLC for TW3K, based both on the exciting opportunities the Romance of the Three Kingdoms source material offers us and the preference we know players have for larger DLCs which adds considerable new replay. What you’ll see initially for TW3K DLC are what we are calling ‘Chapter Packs’.”

Essentially, players will partake in notable chapters from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, utilizing new starting positions while experiencing new events and playing as new heroes. Some characters from the main campaign will also appear, but their circumstances will be different. “They’ll be at a different point in their life, and are likely to have a very different set of needs and desires at this stage in their journey,” High elaborated.

Chapter Packs will be aiming for a scale between Campaign and Culture Packs. New factions and mechanics can be expected, and players will still have the entirety of China available. Another feature coming post-launch is mod tools. Total War: Three Kingdoms seems to have more scope for mods and boasts updated tools. Though a release date for the mod tools hasn’t been provided, it has been in beta testing.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is out on May 23rd for PC, but if you’ve purchased the game, it’s currently available for pre-load. Check out GamingBolt’s official review here for more information.
