Ray tracing is a new technology a lot of people are buzzing about it. It’s a new type of rendering technology that’s set to take our graphics to the next level. A lot of upcoming games are going to support it, such as Cyberpunk and 2077 and Watch Dogs Legion. Next gen consoles are also said to be getting in on it with both Xbox Scarlett and PS5 having confirmed support for the tech. Now we also know that AMD is getting in on the action with their Navi GPUs.
At an E3 2019 presentation, AMD talked about their upcoming tech. In a slide that you can see below, they talked about how their RDNA architecture will support hardware ray tracing effects. That means that newest GPUs (including the ones in the PS5 and Next Xbox) will almost certainly support it.
It also seems to promise full scene ray tracing via the cloud. How that will work, and whether it would have much significance to video games, isn’t clear. What is clear, however, is that things are moving fast, and we’ll be seeing a whole new generation of games soon.
