Microsoft’s E3 presentation laid out a clear future for the Xbox division that we have seen developing bit by bit over the last few years. With the focus on their Game Pass service, and a unification of their Xbox and PC spaces, they are looking at expanding beyond what Xbox means, as opposed to expanding Xbox as a piece of hardware. And the head of Xbox Game Studios echoes that in saying it’s all about one thing: choice.

In an interview with Gamereactor, Matt Booty talked about the future they are envisioning now of people playing games across multiple pieces of hardware, and how opening that up is beneficial in the long run. He thinks that by giving people more choice, it naturally opens their product to even more people.

“We want to make sure that a new game like Halo Infinite looks best, plays best on Project Scarlett, but we also want to make sure that our games run up and down the Xbox One family,” Booty said. “So there will be, sort of similar to what you might do with a PC, the game is going to need to know on which device it’s running and will need to take advantage of the power that’s there.”

It’s interesting that he brings up PC, since it seems more and more like Microsoft is starting to emulate the idea of a more open ecosystem similar to the PC one. It’ll be interesting to see how the next system ties into it all.
