When it comes to comeback stories, it’s hard to beat Capcom’s record over the last few years. While the company saw some major missteps over the last decade, they’ve seen a huge resurgence, with games like Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5 and Monster Hunter World all being commercial and critical hits. Along with that we’ve seen the steady continuation of Street Fighter 5, and the return of successful mid-budget Mega Man games. You’ll notice something about those games, though: they are all established, legacy titles. Capcom hasn’t created a major new franchise in some years, leading many to wonder if they ever would again. Well, Capcom says they aren’t throwing in the towel on new IPs just yet.

In an interview with VGC, Corporate Officer Ryozo Tsujimoto said the company would never give up on new franchises. He acknowledged that a lot of their recent successes have been through older franchises, which the company is very happy about, but says they always have their eyes to new ideas.

“We’re not giving up on the idea of creating new characters and series, it’s just we’re doing quite well at the moment with bringing new, fresh approaches to our existing series,” he explained. “That’s working out very well for us but we’ll never take our eye off creating original games in the future.”

Capcom hasn’t created a major new IP since Dragon’s Dogma back in 2012 for PS3 and 360, which underperformed. Whether we’ll see another big budget attempt from them remains to be seen, but they at least seem to be thinking about it. In the meantime, though, they are riding pretty high on the successes of the old guard.
