This week has been a bit of a roller coaster for those wanting Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the anticipated remake of the PlayStation classic RPG, on other platforms. Since debuting the game, it’s never been clear exactly what the exclusivity deal actually is. Since it’s been said to ‘debut first’ on PS4, many assumed it was timed, but Square Enix has been dodgy towards the question. Today they delivered their most definitive answer yet, and it’s probably not one non-PS4 owners wanted to hear.

Yesterday, the game was mentioned on the official German Xbox Facebook page, giving people hope that the game could even launch on the same day on other systems, but that hope was dashed when it was revealed to be a mistake. Putting one final nail in that coffin, VGC was directly contacted by Sqaure Enix with the blunt statement that there were no plans for other platforms. To quote exactly:

“As previously announced, Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3rd 2020. We have no plans for other platforms.”

Of course, with the size of the game and the franchise in question, it seems rather unlikely that the game will be permanently exclusive to any single system unless Sony has a direct involvement in the game that’s not been revealed to the public. It’s also worth remembering that the game will come out in parts, of which the company isn’t even sure how many there will actually be. So it’s possible Sony has netted exclusive rights to the individual episodes, and we won’t see a non-PlayStation version until all parts have released and then be bundled in one big package. That could be quite a long time as well. Only time will tell, but as of now, if you want Final Fantasy 7 Remake on March 3 of next year, you’re going to need a PlayStation 4.
