Phil Spencer Says Next Xbox Focused As Much On Better “Feeling” Games As Graphics

The Xbox head wants your games to be as smooth as they are pretty.

When it comes to a new generation of consoles, the first thing we’re going to notice is, obviously, the jump in graphics. We will see next gen games, in one form or another, before we actually get down to playing them and that’s what our first impression will be. It’s a natural one, but it seems the Head of the Xbox Division, Phil Spencer, isn’t just thinking of how good the games will look for the next Xbox, dubbed Project Scarlett. It’s also about how the games will play.

In the latest issue of Weekly Famistu, Spencer was interviewed. When talking about the hardware he did mention that, of course, part of the new Xbox would be pushing graphics, but he also wanted to focus on games that “feel” good to play, meaning that the machine will also aim to create better latency and framerate, something this current crop of consoles struggled with in some areas (especially framerate). In this way, he hopes for the system to not just create great looking games, but ones that play better, too (thanks to Twinfinite for transcribing and translating the interview).

It’s an ambitious idea, so it’ll be interesting to see exactly where Microsoft will land on that. While we’ve gotten a lot of potential information on the next generation consoles, we’ve yet to see them. Probably some time at the beginning of next year (perhaps at the next E3) we should get a better idea of where we’re at.
