Street Fighter 5 launched back in 2016 to some mixed feelings. While, on a purely technical level, the game is about the best the series has ever been, the lack of communication and features hampered the experience. Largely because of that, the game lagged behind its predecessor. Capcom have worked over the years to improve the overall experience, and it looks like it’s worked. Better late than never, because the game has now passed the sales of the original, vanilla release of Street Fighter 4.

Capcom updated their Platinum Sellers page to show that Street Fighter 5 has now shipped 3.7 million copies, which puts it just over the 3.4 million of vanilla Street Fighter 4 It’s quite the bump, since that would put it as selling roughly 600,000 units from the last quarter, which is not an insignificant increase in sales. But it is worth noting that this includes only the original release of SF4. If you count the re-releases of that game, it’s got a significant lead.

How much of a success you want to gauge that as is up to you. Clearly the amount of copies lagged behind, but there’s also been significantly more piecemeal DLC in the game than 4 had, with costumes and stages, with potentially more coming by the end of the year. If you want to try Street Fighter 5 out yourself, there’s a free trial of the game running until August 11th for both PlayStation 4 and PC.
