Konami Isn’t Done With Making “High-End Console Games”

We can expect the company to make more than just PES and Yu-Gi-Oh in the future.

2015’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was the last time we got a real, major console game from Konami (unless you count Metal Gear Survive, which- well, why would you). After internal restructuring, the company decided to shift its focus elsewhere, cancelling games such as Silent Hills, and ever since then, they’ve been focused only on their Pro Evolution Soccer and Yu-Gi-Oh titles.

In spite of that, though, in terms of financial success, Konami seems to be doing better than it ever has– but that doesn’t mean we won’t ever see them making big budget console games again. Recently, while speaking with GamesIndustry, Konami Europe president Masami Saso said that they’ll eventually get back to working on their “globally known IP”.

“Even with new platforms coming out, we believe high-end console games are the most important,” Saso said. “We challenge for innovative ideas and technology within our console games and apply them to other devices, so we will continue to put effort into our console games.”

“We also plan to increase our portfolio,” he continued. “In addition to the multi-device titles for PES and Yu-Gi-Oh, we plan to work on projects with other globally known IPs in the near future.”

Konami’s eFootball PES 2020 launches this month, while Contra: Rogue Corps is also coming out in September. Here’s hoping the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill also eventually see the light of day again.
